Circular inspiration: Almere’s UpCycle City Contest
The municipality of Almere aspires to become a waste-free and energy-neutral city by 2022. Read about how the UpCycle City competition is managing to help start-ups and companies develop business cases for the upcycling of waste.
Through the city’s innovative use of public funds, new collaborations were also encouraged between companies and entrepreneurs who might otherwise choose to work separately.
Ruud Koonstra, first energy commissioner in the Netherlands, said: "This competition is unique in the Netherlands. There weren't many applicants, but the ones we had were very powerful. We were impressed with the courage shown: working together with people that are working in a different field from each other, and making new connections."
